Car
If you are driving, start from any major city in the Rift Valley region. For example, if you are starting from Nakuru, take the Nakuru-Eldoret road (A104) until you reach the junction with the A104 to Kisumu. Follow the signs for Kisumu, and then continue on the A1 road towards the city of Kisumu. Once you get to Kisumu, follow the signs to the waterfront area where Lake Victoria is located. Be aware of potential tolls along the way, and ensure your vehicle is in good condition for the journey.
Public Transportation
To reach Lake Victoria using public transportation, start by taking a matatu (shared taxi) or bus from major towns such as Nakuru or Eldoret to Kisumu. Matatus to Kisumu are frequent and can be found at designated matatu stages. Once you arrive in Kisumu, head towards the Kisumu waterfront where you will find access to Lake Victoria. The fare from Nakuru to Kisumu typically ranges from 300 to 500 TZS depending on the vehicle type. Ensure to check the schedule for return trips.
Boat
Upon reaching Kisumu, you may want to explore the lake further by taking a boat ride. Several operators offer boat services at the Kisumu waterfront. Prices for boat rides vary based on the duration and type of tour, typically starting at around 500 TZS for short trips. It’s advisable to negotiate the price beforehand and ensure that the boat operator is reputable.
