Getting There

  • Car Rental

If you're starting from Arusha, rent a car and head south on the A104 road towards Moshi. After approximately 70 kilometers, take the exit towards B1 and continue on this road for about 30 kilometers. Look for signs directing you to Lake Chala. The lake is located near the border of Tanzania and Kenya, on the eastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. You'll need to navigate a smaller road for the last few kilometers which may be unpaved, so a 4WD vehicle is recommended.

  • Public Transportation (Bus)

Begin your journey at the Arusha Bus Station, where you can catch a bus heading to Moshi. The fare is usually around 5,000 TZS (Tanzanian Shillings). After reaching Moshi, you will need to catch a local dala-dala (minibus) headed towards the village of Chala. The fare for this trip is about 1,500 TZS. Inform the driver that you want to go to Lake Chala, and they will drop you off near the entrance. From there, you may have to walk approximately 2 kilometers to reach the lake itself.

  • Taxi or Ride-Sharing

If you prefer a more direct route, you can hire a taxi from either Arusha or Moshi. Agree on a fare before starting your journey; it may cost between 50,000 to 80,000 TZS from Moshi. The driver will take you directly to the lake. If you're using a ride-sharing app, ensure you input 'Lake Chala' as your destination. The road may not be paved, so confirm that the driver is comfortable navigating such routes.

  • Guided Tour

Consider booking a guided tour from Arusha or Moshi. Many tour companies offer packages that include transportation, a guide, and sometimes meals for a price that typically ranges from 100,000 to 200,000 TZS per person. This option often provides a more informative experience as guides can share insights about the lake and its surroundings.
