Getting there

Car Rental

If you have rented a car, head towards the northern part of Zanzibar City. Start on the Zanzibar Urban West Road (A1) and follow the signs toward Nungwi. After approximately 50 km, you will reach a fork in the road; take the left branch toward Matemwe. Continue driving until you reach Matemwe, then follow the coastal road south for about 10 km until you see signs for Selem Beach. The beach is located at W6P4+5H, Zanzibar.

Public Transport (Dala Dala)

To reach Selem Beach via public transport, take a Dala Dala (shared minibus) from the main bus terminal in Zanzibar City. Look for the Dala Dala heading to Matemwe; the fare is approximately 2,000 TZS (Tanzanian Shillings). The journey takes around 1 hour. Once you arrive in Matemwe, you can catch another Dala Dala heading towards Nungwi or Matemwe beach for about 1,000 TZS. Inform the driver to drop you off at Selem Beach. The beach is a short walk from the main road.

Taxi

For a more direct and comfortable option, you can hire a taxi from Zanzibar City to Selem Beach. This will cost around 40,000 to 70,000 TZS depending on your negotiation skills and time of day. The drive takes approximately 45 minutes. Ensure you confirm the price before starting your journey.

Bicycle Rental

For the adventurous traveler, consider renting a bicycle in Zanzibar City. Follow the A1 road towards Matemwe, which is about 50 km away. This route is scenic and takes you through various local villages. Make sure to bring water and snacks, as the ride can take 3-4 hours. Once in Matemwe, ask locals for directions to Selem Beach, which will be another 10 km ride south along the coast.
