If you're traveling by car, start by locating your current position in the Appalachian Mountains. For example, if you're near Boone, NC, take US-421 N toward TN-91. Continue on TN-91, which will lead you to Roan Mountain. Follow TN-91 to the intersection with TN-143. Turn onto TN-143, and follow the road for approximately 6 miles until you reach Roan Mountain State Park, located at 527 TN-143, Roan Mountain, TN 37687. Parking is available on-site, and no fee is required for entering the park.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, your best option is to take a Greyhound or Megabus to Johnson City, TN. From there, you can use a local taxi service or rideshare app (like Uber or Lyft) to get to Roan Mountain State Park. The distance from Johnson City to the park is about 30 miles, and taxi fares can vary, so expect to pay between $50-$70. Make sure to arrange your return trip as public transport options might be limited in the evening.
Bicycle
For the adventurous, biking can be an exhilarating way to reach Roan Mountain State Park. If you're starting from Elizabethton, take TN-67 W, which leads to TN-91.
