Car
If you're traveling by car, you can start from the nearest major city, Knoxville, TN. Head southeast on I-40 E towards Asheville. Take exit 407 for US-441 S. Follow US-441 S for about 20 miles. Once you reach the town of Gatlinburg, continue on US-441 S, which becomes the Great Smoky Mountains Parkway. After about 10 miles, turn onto Newfound Gap Road (US-441) and follow it for approximately 12 miles to the parking area for Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the Smokies, which is about 5 miles from Old Black. The last stretch requires a short hike from the Clingmans Dome parking area to Old Black, roughly 1 mile up the trail. Be aware that parking at Clingmans Dome may incur a small fee depending on the season.
Public Transportation
For visitors using public transportation, the best option is to take a Greyhound or Megabus to Knoxville, TN. Once in Knoxville, you can take a local bus (Knoxville Area Transit) to reach the Smoky Mountains National Park. However, public transport does not take you directly to Old Black, so you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to take you to Clingmans Dome. From the Clingmans Dome parking area, you will need to hike approximately 1 mile to Old Black. Make sure to check the bus schedules in advance as they can be infrequent.
Hiking
If you are already within the Appalachian Mountains and prefer hiking, there are various trailheads to access Old Black. If you're near Clingmans Dome, take the Forney Ridge Trail. This moderate to strenuous trail will lead you directly to Old Black. The hike is about 1 mile from the Clingmans Dome parking area. Make sure to wear appropriate hiking gear and carry plenty of water, as the terrain can be rugged.
