History of Overton

Early Residential Development

Overton developed as part of Lubbock’s early residential expansion around the growing city and the land that would become Texas Technological College. South Overton contains much of the neighbourhood’s older built fabric, including modest houses associated with the residential growth of the early twentieth century. Its position near the university later attracted faculty, staff and students, giving the area a close connection with campus life while retaining a primarily residential identity.

The University Shapes the District

The opening of Texas Technological College in 1925 changed the scale and direction of development around Overton. As the institution expanded into Texas Tech University, nearby streets became increasingly important to student housing, local retail and everyday services. Overton’s proximity to campus encouraged a mixture of long-term homes, rental properties, small businesses and informal connections to university culture, distinguishing it from more distant residential parts of Lubbock.

South Overton’s Historic Character

South Overton preserves a concentration of older residential buildings that illustrates Lubbock’s growth during the decades when the university and the city were expanding together.
