If you are driving, start your journey from the capital city, Banjul. Head east on the A1 road towards Serrekunda. Continue on the A1 for approximately 30 kilometers until you reach the junction for the A2 road towards Janjanbureh. After about 70 kilometers, turn left onto the ferry terminal road towards the Gambia River. Here, you will park your car and take the ferry to Maccarthy Island. The ferry ride takes about 15-20 minutes and costs approximately D20-30 (Gambian Dalasi).

To reach Maccarthy Island via public transport, start from the main bus station in Banjul. Look for a 'Gelephu' or 'Janjanbureh' bound minibus. The journey will take around 2-3 hours, and the fare is about D50-70. Once you arrive in Janjanbureh, you will need to take a taxi or a local bike taxi (also known as a 'bajaj') to the ferry terminal. The taxi cost is around D100-150. From the ferry terminal, you will take a boat to Maccarthy Island, which costs approximately D20-30 and takes about 15-20 minutes.
