Walking
Start your journey from the center of Aileu, near the main market. Head south on the main road (Aileu - Ainaro Road), keeping the market on your left. Continue walking for about 2 kilometers until you reach the fork in the road. At the fork, take the left path towards the hills, which will lead you towards the foot of Tatamailau. Follow the path as it begins to incline; this will lead you to several local villages. Be sure to ask locals for directions to Tatamailau if you feel unsure. The trail becomes more pronounced as you ascend. The hike to the peak is about 5 kilometers from the fork, and it can take approximately 2-3 hours depending on your pace.
Guided Tour
Consider joining a guided hiking tour from Aileu. Many local tour operators offer packages that include transportation to the base of Tatamailau and a guided hike. You can find these operators near the main market or ask your hotel for recommendations. Tours typically start early in the morning, providing you with all necessary gear and refreshments. This option is ideal if you prefer a more structured experience with knowledgeable guides who can share insights about the local flora and fauna.
Bicycle
If you're feeling adventurous and have access to a bicycle, you can cycle from Aileu towards the Tatamailau trailhead. Start at the main market and head south on Aileu - Ainaro Road. After about 2 kilometers, take the left fork towards the hills. The road may be rough, so a mountain bike is recommended. Once you reach the base of Tatamailau, park your bike and continue on foot up the hiking trail. Ensure you check the weather conditions beforehand, as the trail can become slippery after rain.
