Car
If you're traveling by car, start from the nearest major town in Togo, Afagnan. From Afagnan, take the Route Nationale 1 (RN1) heading towards Ghana. Follow the signs for Mount Afadja, which is located near the border with Ghana. After approximately 30 minutes, you will reach the sign directing you towards Mount Afadja. Turn onto the dirt road and continue for about 10 kilometers until you see the entrance to the park area. Make sure to have cash available for entrance fees, typically around 1,000 CFA (approximately $2).
Public Transportation
To reach Mount Afadja by public transport, start from Lomé, the capital of Togo. Take a shared taxi or a bus from Lomé to Afagnan. The bus ride takes about 2 hours and costs around 2,000 CFA (approximately $3.50). Once in Afagnan, look for a shared taxi heading towards the Mount Afadja area. This ride will take an additional 30 minutes and should cost about 1,500 CFA (approximately $2.50). Ensure you communicate your destination clearly to the driver. After getting off near the entrance, prepare for a short walk to the base of the mountain.
Hiking
Once you arrive at the entrance of Mount Afadja, you will need to hike to reach the summit. The trail is well-marked, but be prepared for steep sections. It typically takes about 1 to 2 hours to reach the top, depending on your fitness level. Bring water and snacks, and wear sturdy hiking shoes for a comfortable experience. There may be a small fee for guided tours if you choose to hire a local guide.
