Car
If you have access to a car, start by heading to the main port area of Fonoifua Island. From there, take the ferry to Tongatapu. The ferry operates several times a day, but it’s important to check the schedule ahead of time, as it may vary. The journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, and there is a fee for the ferry, typically around Tongan Paʻanga (TOP) 20-30 one way. Upon arrival at Tongatapu's main port, follow the signs to the capital, Nuku'alofa, which is about a 20-minute drive from the port.
Public Transportation
To reach Tongatapu via public transportation, start at the local bus stop near the main village in Fonoifua. Check the local timetable for ferry departures to Tongatapu, as buses usually align with the ferry schedules. After taking the bus to the ferry terminal, purchase your ferry ticket, which typically costs around TOP 20-30. The ferry ride will take about 1.5 to 2 hours. Once you arrive at Tongatapu, local buses or taxis are available to take you to Nuku'alofa or other destinations on the island.
