History of Lara

A Coastal Landscape Outside the Old City

Before modern Lara developed, the area east of Antalya was primarily a coastal and agricultural landscape linked to the wider plain rather than a dense urban quarter. Its natural identity came from the Mediterranean shore, the Düden watercourse and the fertile land around Antalya. The falls where the Düden reaches the sea formed a notable geographical feature, while the escarpment and shore separated the area from the historic core around Kaleiçi. Lara’s present-day name is therefore associated principally with the eastern coastal zone and its beach, not with a preserved historic town centre.

Urban Expansion Towards the East

As Antalya expanded beyond its historic centre during the second half of the twentieth century, new roads, apartment districts and commercial services spread eastwards across the coastal plain. Lara became part of this outward growth, providing space for residential development and improved connections towards the airport. The area’s broad streets and planned development contrast with Kaleiçi’s historic lanes, reflecting Antalya’s transformation from a regional port city into a rapidly growing Mediterranean urban centre. The Düden river corridor and coastal parks remained important landscape features as construction increased around them.

Tourism and the Resort Belt

Late twentieth-century tourism and subsequent investment reshaped Lara’s coastline. Beach facilities, hotels, restaurants and visitor services grew alongside permanent housing, while the road east towards Kundu became associated with large resort complexes. This development divided the wider Lara area into different experiences: urban Lara contains apartment neighbourhoods, shopping and everyday services, whereas the farther coastal belt is dominated by resort properties. The Lower Düden Waterfall and Lara Beach continued to provide publicly recognisable natural landmarks within a landscape increasingly defined by leisure, transport and accommodation.
