History of Armutalan

From Rural Land to Outlying Quarter

Before Marmaris expanded inland as a resort, the area now known as Armutalan was part of the rural landscape behind the older coastal settlement, with cultivated plots and wooded hills shaping its character. Its name is commonly associated with pear cultivation, although the modern district is defined less by agriculture than by urban growth. As Marmaris developed beyond its harbour and traditional centre, roads and housing extended into the inland valleys and lower slopes, bringing former rural land into the town’s expanding orbit.

The growth of package tourism and holiday accommodation in Marmaris during the late twentieth century accelerated development in Armutalan.
