Car
From the town of Mbale, head northwest on the A109 road towards the town of Bukwa. After approximately 30 km, turn left onto the road leading to the Mount Elgon Central Forest Reserve. Follow the signs as you approach the reserve entrance. Be prepared for some rough terrain as the road may not be well maintained. Allocate about 1 hour for this drive from Mbale.
Public Transportation
Start by taking a taxi or boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) from Mbale to Bukwa. This will cost you approximately 10,000 UGX. The journey should take about 30 minutes. Once you reach Bukwa, look for local transport options, such as a shared taxi or a boda-boda, to take you to the entrance of Mount Elgon Central Forest Reserve. The last part of the journey may require some negotiation on the fare, which can range from 5,000 to 15,000 UGX depending on your bargaining skills.
Walking/Hiking
If you are already near the reserve, you can opt to hike to the entrance. This is advisable only for experienced hikers. Make sure to bring adequate supplies, a map, and a local guide if you are unfamiliar with the area. The walking distance from nearby villages can vary, so check with locals for the best routes and conditions.
