History of Donetsk

Donetsk was founded in 1869 by a Welsh businessman, John Hughes, who established a steel plant and several coal mines in the region. Originally named Yuzovka after Hughes, the city quickly grew as an industrial hub. By the early 20th century, it had become a significant center for coal mining and metallurgy in the Russian Empire.
