Zaporozhye, known historically as Alexandrovsk, is situated on the banks of the Dnieper River. It was founded in 1770 as part of the Russian Empire's efforts to fortify its southeastern frontiers. The city's name refers to its location 'beyond the rapids' of the Dnieper, which were significant natural barriers that helped shape the area's early history.
