History of Yas Island

From Island to Development Zone

Yas Island was developed as a major mixed-use project on an island east of Abu Dhabi, transforming a largely undeveloped coastal setting into a planned destination for leisure, hospitality, retail and sport. The project formed part of Abu Dhabi’s wider effort to diversify its economy and broaden the emirate’s international visitor appeal beyond government, energy and business activity. Rather than evolving through the gradual layering of residential streets, Yas was conceived through master planning, land reclamation, extensive infrastructure and purpose-built districts. Its identity therefore comes from coordinated development: attractions, hotels, roads, marinas and public spaces were designed to operate together as a single destination.

The Circuit Changes Yas

Yas Marina Circuit opened in 2009 and immediately gave the island an internationally recognisable focus. Designed by Hermann Tilke, the circuit hosted its first Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2009, establishing a major annual sporting event and a permanent motorsport presence. The track’s architecture, floodlighting and marina setting became central to Yas Island’s image, while the circuit also supported driving experiences and other events outside the Grand Prix period. Its arrival helped shape the surrounding island as an entertainment district rather than simply a resort development, linking Abu Dhabi to the global calendar of Formula 1 host destinations.

An Expanding Leisure Landscape

During the 2010s and 2020s, Yas Island broadened its offer with large attractions, hotels, Yas Mall, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, Etihad Arena and further waterfront development. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi opened in 2010, followed by Yas Waterworld in 2013 and Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi in 2018; SeaWorld Abu Dhabi opened in 2023. Yas Bay Waterfront added a further dining, hospitality and entertainment focus on the southern side of the island. This expansion has reinforced Yas as a planned leisure district whose contemporary significance lies in its concentration of themed attractions, major events, retail and coastal public spaces.
