How to get there

Yas Island lies beside Abu Dhabi International Airport, making it one of the emirate’s most convenient visitor districts for air arrivals. It is connected by road to central Abu Dhabi and to the mainland routes leading towards Dubai, with taxis, private transfers and hire cars offering the most straightforward access. Currency and Payment
The currency is the United Arab Emirates dirham, written as AED or د.إ. History of Yas Island

From Coastal Land to Planned District

Yas Island is a modern development rather than an old settlement whose history extends through successive historic periods. Its creation formed part of Abu Dhabi’s wider strategy to diversify the emirate’s economy and develop large-scale tourism, leisure and entertainment infrastructure. The island was planned as an integrated destination combining attractions, hotels, residential areas, retail, sport and waterfront development. This approach transformed a low-lying coastal site into one of the United Arab Emirates’ most recognisable visitor districts, with the island’s identity shaped primarily by contemporary architecture, engineered landscapes and purpose-built public venues.

Motorsport Comes to Yas Marina

Yas Marina Circuit became the island’s defining early landmark and hosted its inaugural Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2009. Designed by Hermann Tilke, the circuit introduced a major international sporting event to Abu Dhabi and placed Yas Island on the global motorsport calendar. Its floodlit layout, marina setting and associated event facilities helped establish the island as more than a leisure complex, creating a recurring sporting moment that influences hotel demand, transport planning and the island’s international profile. The circuit also supports other motor-racing and driving activities beyond the annual Grand Prix.

The First Wave of Attractions

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi opened in 2010 beneath its vast red roof, bringing a Ferrari-themed indoor park and Formula Rossa, one of the destination’s signature high-speed rides, to Yas Island. Yas Waterworld followed in 2013, adding a large waterpark whose themed environment drew on Emirati pearl-diving heritage, while Warner Bros.
