Belfast Castle was constructed in the 1860s, replacing an earlier castle destroyed by fire in the city centre. Commissioned initially by the 3rd Marquis of Donegall and completed by his son-in-law, Lord Ashley (later the 8th Earl of Shaftesbury), the castle showcases Victorian architectural elegance with notable features such as the serpentine staircase adorned with the Shaftesbury crest. The Donegall coat of arms remains prominently displayed above the entrance, symbolizing the family’s legacy. In 1934, the 9th Earl of Shaftesbury gifted the castle to Belfast, marking its transition from a private residence to a cherished public landmark.

Situated approximately 400 feet above sea level, Belfast Castle offers sweeping views of Belfast Lough and the city skyline. It nestles within Cave Hill Country Park, a large natural reserve featuring mixed woodland, parkland, and diverse wildlife including long-eared owls and sparrowhawks. Visitors can enjoy various walking trails of differing lengths and difficulties, such as the Castle Trail, Estate Trail, and the more challenging Cavehill Trail, which passes historic sites like McArt’s Fort and the Devil’s Punchbowl.

The castle is open daily from 9am to 9pm (with some variation and occasional private event closures). Entry to the castle and its gardens is free. Inside, visitors can explore the ground and first floors, which retain many original architectural details including fireplaces. The Cave Hill Visitor Centre, located within the castle, offers exhibits and an 8-minute film about the area's natural and cultural history. Dining options include the Tavern Coffee Shop and the Cellar Restaurant, the latter requiring advance booking. The estate also features a children’s adventurous playground and picnic areas, making it family-friendly.

Belfast Castle serves as a popular venue for weddings, conferences, and social events, continuing its tradition as a community hub since the mid-20th century. The castle’s elegant interiors and picturesque gardens provide a romantic and historic backdrop for celebrations.
