RISE stands as Belfast’s largest public art sculpture, towering 37.5 meters high and spanning 30 meters wide. Crafted from steel, it features a smaller geodesic sphere suspended within a larger spherical frame, both composed of straight bars that minimize distances between points, creating a visually captivating lattice. Design Intent Rooted in Community and Reconciliation

Amid Belfast’s history of division, particularly the Westlink’s role as a physical and symbolic barrier between unionist and nationalist communities, the artist Wolfgang Buttress conceived RISE to embody inclusivity and unity. The sculpture’s spherical form has no front or back, allowing it to be viewed equally from all sides, symbolizing a shared future beyond conflict. Buttress engaged local communities through creative workshops involving schoolchildren and senior citizens, fostering a collective connection to the artwork.

Collaborative Creation and Funding

The project was led by Belfast City Council with substantial support and funding from the Department for Social Development, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, and the National Lottery’s Big Lottery Fund. Construction began after a competitive selection process, with Wolfgang Buttress chosen among over 40 artists. The final cost was approximately £486,000, slightly above initial estimates. Fabrication was undertaken by M Hasson and Sons Ltd, with GRAHAM Construction managing on-site assembly, overcoming significant engineering challenges to realize the design.
