St Chad's Cathedral was constructed between 1839 and 1841 to serve Birmingham's growing Catholic community, inspired by Bishop Thomas Walsh. The design was conceived by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, a pioneer of Gothic Revival architecture, who modeled it on 13th-century North German Gothic styles. Built primarily of brick with Bath stone dressings, the cathedral replaced an earlier Georgian chapel and was consecrated on 21 June 1841. Its south-west spire, added in 1856 by Pugin’s son Edward Welby Pugin, commemorates Canon John Moore, an early administrator of the cathedral.

St Chad's holds the distinction of being the first Catholic cathedral erected in England since the Reformation. It was elevated to cathedral status in 1850 following Pope Pius IX's restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England and Wales. The cathedral serves as the mother church of the Archdiocese of Birmingham and houses the relics of St Chad, the 7th-century apostle of the Midlands. These relics, authenticated by radiocarbon dating, are enshrined above the altar, making the cathedral a significant pilgrimage site.

The interior reflects Pugin’s meticulous Gothic Revival style, featuring beautifully stencilled pillars, an oak archbishop’s throne, and ecclesiastical furnishings designed or inspired by Pugin and the Hardman family. A fifteenth-century oak statue of the Virgin Mary, restored by Pugin, stands under the Lady Chapel canopy, marking one of the first such statues publicly venerated in England after the Reformation. St Edward’s Chapel, added in 1933 by Pugin’s grandson Sebastian Pugin Powell, memorializes Archbishop Edward Ilsley and includes stained glass windows depicting the history of the relics and church leaders.

During World War II, the cathedral narrowly escaped destruction when an incendiary bomb penetrated the roof in 1940 but was extinguished by burst central heating pipes. A thanksgiving inscription, "Deo Gratias 22 Nov 1940," commemorates this event in the transept ceiling. This resilience has made the cathedral a symbol of endurance for Birmingham’s Catholic community.

St Chad's continues to be a vibrant center of worship and cultural heritage. It hosts important liturgical ceremonies, including the enthronement of bishops, and maintains a Chapter of Canons established in 1852. The cathedral’s location in Birmingham’s Gunmakers Quarter connects it to the city’s rich industrial history, while its status as a minor basilica since 1941 grants it special papal privileges and symbols.

The cathedral’s brick construction and Germanic Gothic style reflect both economical choices and Pugin’s architectural ideals.
