Christ's Pieces occupies land that was once part of the Barnwell Open Fields, historically known as the Clayangles. Originally farmland and pasture, it appears on maps as early as 1574 as a site for cereal crops. The land was owned by Jesus College until 1886, when it was purchased by the Cambridge Corporation for £1,000 and transformed into the Victorian park seen today. The park retains many original features including a bowling green, pavilion, and carpet bedding, reflecting its 19th-century design. Notably, the diagonal paths trace routes dating back to the 16th century, such as Pike's Walk and Milton's Walk, the latter named after poet John Milton, who studied at Christ’s College nearby.

Christ's Pieces is renowned for its mature tree avenues, ornamental flower beds, and well-maintained shrubbery that provide year-round visual appeal and shade. The park’s layout includes a network of paths that divide the space into triangular sections, reminiscent of the original parcels of land or “pieces” that gave the park its name. The western boundary is defined by the high walls and trees of Christ’s College, while Emmanuel College’s greenery borders the southeast. The park is protected from development by stipulations dating back to its acquisition, ensuring it remains a public open space in perpetuity. The Christ's Pieces Residents Association actively supports the preservation and character of the park and surrounding neighbourhood.

Situated between Christ’s College and Emmanuel College, Christ’s Pieces is bordered by King Street to the north, Emmanuel Road to the east, Drummer Street to the south, and Milton’s Walk to the west. It acts as a crucial pedestrian link between Cambridge’s city centre and the Grafton Centre shopping mall. The Cambridge bus station lies adjacent to the park’s southern edge, making it highly accessible.
