The Corporation of Cambridge purchased the site from Jesus College in 1886 and created the present layout with improved drainage, avenues of trees, formal flower beds and open grass. Milton's Walk, the western boundary, follows a medieval lane named after John Milton who studied at adjacent Christ's College. The park covers 3.2 hectares and includes a Diana Princess of Wales memorial rose garden. Tennis courts occupy the northwest corner, while the southeast holds the bowling green and clubhouse. The Drummer Street bus station runs along the southern edge.

Most visitors pass through on foot between the city centre and the bus station or Grafton Centre, pausing on benches or grass for 15 to 45 minutes. Others spread picnics, use the playground, play table tennis or book the tennis courts. The atmosphere stays open and functional rather than secluded, with steady foot traffic from commuters, shoppers and families. In good weather the grass fills with people at lunchtimes and weekends; early mornings and wet days remain quieter. A typical visit involves walking the paths, resting briefly and continuing onward.

Public toilets with disabled access stand near the bus station alongside a refreshment kiosk. Four hard tennis courts require advance booking through Clubspark at a modest fee. The bowling green serves the City of Cambridge Bowls Club. Benches line the paths, and a children's playground sits within the grass area. Table tennis tables provide additional free activity. No visitor centre or lockers are present. Entry to the park itself remains free at all times.

The park lies immediately beside Cambridge bus station, allowing direct arrival on many local routes. From Market Square or the main colleges a walk of five to ten minutes along streets or Milton's Walk reaches the site. Cycling is straightforward on Cambridge's network of paths. Street parking nearby is limited and paid. The location sits east of Christ's College and north of Emmanuel College, with King Street to the north and Emmanuel Road to the east. No hike or seasonal restrictions apply.

Seasonal Patterns and Practical Conditions

Weather strongly affects how long people linger. Clear mild days encourage extended sitting and play on the grass, while rain or cold confines use to the paths. The park functions year-round as a through-route even when grass areas turn muddy. Tree cover supplies shade in summer. No closures occur for weather. Managed by Cambridge City Council, the site holds Green Flag Award status for horticultural standards and upkeep.
