The premises form part of a cluster of converted farm buildings on a 400-acre working organic farm that has belonged to the Radford family for over a century. The farm gained organic certification in 2000 and follows Higher Level Stewardship conservation practices. Shopping takes place indoors while movement between units occurs across open courtyards and rural lanes.

The boutique curates contemporary women’s clothing, footwear, accessories and gifts with a Scandinavian and Danish influence alongside colour, print and natural fabrics. Stock includes Masai, Cut Loose, Nice Things, Lofina, By Basics, Yerse, MAC denim, Indi & Cold and Naguisa. The owners describe a “real women” buying approach on a non-intimidating shop floor. Cuckoo began in the mid-2000s as part of the vintage lifestyle brand Nest at Burwash before shifting toward contemporary independent labels. Kate Bols joined Michelle Veenman approximately sixteen years before the 2025 interview. The pair previously operated a second shop in Cambridge for about ten years, closing it after the first Covid lockdown and concentrating trade at the Barton location. Standard hours are Monday to Saturday 10:00–17:00 and Sunday 11:00–17:00, though seasonal winter Sunday hours have varied.
