Originally a World War II bombing decoy site, Hack Green was redeveloped into a radar station and later a secret nuclear bunker during the Cold War. Situated near Nantwich in Cheshire, this underground complex was designed to serve as a Regional Government Headquarters in the event of nuclear war. For over 50 years, it remained classified and hidden beneath the English countryside, playing a critical role in Britain's nuclear defense strategy.

Declassified in 1993 as the threat of nuclear conflict diminished, the bunker was acquired by the Hack Green Cold War & Radar Museum Trust. It was transformed into a museum that preserves and interprets Cold War history. Visitors can now explore the 35,000 sq ft labyrinth of corridors, including communications rooms, a hospital, and a Cold War exhibition that vividly illustrates the era’s tensions and government preparations.

The museum showcases authentic Cold War artifacts, including real nuclear weapons, communications equipment, and a state-of-the-art "Nuclear Shelter Experience" that simulates being inside a shelter during a nuclear attack. A cinema screens previously banned nuclear war films, adding depth to the visitor experience. The onsite Bunker Bistro offers themed refreshments, and a shop sells Cold War memorabilia, making it a comprehensive and immersive visit.

Entering through massive blast doors, visitors are transported into a chilling, atmospheric environment that captures the tension of the Cold War era. The bunker’s robust 1980s construction, costing over £35 million, includes reinforced corridors and specialized rooms designed for survival and government continuity. The underground setting, dim lighting, and preserved equipment evoke a powerful sense of history and urgency.

Open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm, and daily during school holidays and bank holidays, the bunker is located about 6km from Nantwich. While public transport options are limited, the site is accessible by car and a short walk from the nearby Shropshire Union Canal. Tickets include annual passes, allowing multiple visits within a year. Guided tours are not offered; the visit is self-guided and typically lasts 1.5 to 2 hours.
