Erskine was instrumental in shaping the town’s industrial identity, particularly through coal mining development. Twice Secretary of State for Scotland under Queen Anne, his shifting political loyalties earned him the nickname 'Bobbing John.' He also led the failed Jacobite uprising of 1715 and died in exile, with his estates later restored to his family.
