Nestled on Ebrington Square, just across the Peace Bridge from Derry’s famous city walls, Walled City Brewery occupies a striking 1890s former military pay office. This handsome brick building, part of the historic Ebrington Barracks complex, has been transformed into a modern craft brewery and restaurant while retaining its character and sense of place. As the first craft brewery to operate in Derry city centre for more than 100 years, it represents a bold revival of local brewing tradition, blending heritage architecture with contemporary brewing innovation.

Beer, Food and Family Craftsmanship

The brewery is very much a family affair, founded by James Huey, a qualified brewer with years of experience in product development at Guinness. Alongside his wife Louise and sister Jill McKillop, the team crafts a range of small-batch, premium beers that reflect the flavours and spirit of the north-west. Core brews like Boom Derry Pale Ale, Stitch India Pale Ale and Kicks Pilsner are joined by seasonal and experimental batches, all brewed on-site. The kitchen complements the beers with a lively, eclectic menu of local tapas-style plates and larger dishes, showcasing seasonal produce from the region in creative, flavourful ways.

Inside, the space is atmospheric and distinctly beer-themed, with a design that celebrates brewing culture while remaining welcoming and modern. The main restaurant and bar area buzzes with energy, especially on weekends, when locals and visitors gather for dinner, drinks and special events. For beer enthusiasts, the weekend taproom offers a dedicated space to sample the widest range of on-site brewed craft beers, spirits and cocktails, all produced under a producers’ licence that highlights the brewery’s self-sufficiency and creativity.

The HomeBrew Academy offers hands-on brewing courses, while the Beer Masterclass and Earhart Gin School provide fun, educational sessions for groups and individuals.
