Wetheral Priory Gatehouse: A Medieval Sentinel of Cumbria
Explore Cumbria’s finest medieval gatehouse, a fortified monastic gateway offering rich history and scenic views by the River Eden.
Wetheral Priory Gatehouse is a well-preserved 15th-century fortified gatehouse in Cumbria, the sole surviving structure of a Benedictine priory founded in the early 12th century. Once the main entrance to the priory’s outer courtyard, it later served as a vicarage and hayloft. Today, managed by English Heritage, it offers visitors a glimpse into medieval monastic life with its crenellated walls, historic fireplaces, and scenic views over the surrounding countryside and River Eden.
