From Sunderland city centre, walk east along Fawcett Street for about 10 minutes. The Athenaeum is on the right-hand side, just past the junction with Holmeside, in the Sunniside area. The route is flat and fully accessible, passing shops, bars and the entrance to Mowbray Park.
