Dalkeith Country Park spans approximately 1,000 acres of lush woodlands, open meadows, and riverbanks, located just a short distance from Edinburgh's city centre. The park is part of a historic estate owned by the Duke of Buccleuch, with architecture designed by renowned Scottish architects such as James Smith, Robert Adam, and William Burn. Visitors can admire Dalkeith Palace from the park grounds, a grand 18th-century building with a fascinating past, though it is not open to the public. The landscape is home to ancient oak woods, some trees over 900 years old, and a diverse wildlife population including roe deer, otters, badgers, and buzzards.

A highlight of the park is Fort Douglas, an imaginative adventure playground designed for children of all ages. It features turreted treehouses, zip wires, rope bridges, climbing walls, giant slides, and a dedicated toddler area. Adults can join in the fun or relax nearby while watching the children play. Fort Douglas operates with timed sessions and requires advance booking, especially during peak periods. The playground is dog-free to ensure safety and is open daily with morning and afternoon sessions.

The former 18th-century stableyard has been transformed into the Restoration Yard, a Tuscan-inspired courtyard housing The Kitchen restaurant, The Store shop, and a wellbeing and fitness studio. The Kitchen offers brunch and lunch with various dietary options including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free meals. The Store features beautiful curated collections perfect for gifts or souvenirs. The wellbeing studio provides fitness classes and relaxation spaces, making it a holistic destination within the park.

Dalkeith Country Park offers numerous waymarked walking and cycling trails suitable for all abilities, including paths accessible for buggies and bikes. Visitors can explore scenic routes along the River Esk, through shaded glens, and past historic bridges and estate buildings. The park encourages nature spotting, with opportunities to see local wildlife and discover fairy doors hidden in the woodland. The Old Oak Wood trail is a special feature, although it may close seasonally to protect the ancient trees.

During summer months, the park opens a campsite with spacious pitches for tents and pre-pitched bell tents equipped with air beds. Campers enjoy proximity to Fort Douglas and discounted entry to the playground, as well as exclusive breakfast offers at The Kitchen.
