A Park Born from Generosity and Memory

Strathaven Park is not simply a collection of recreational facilities—it is a living memorial to the town's history. The park comprises two distinct sections, each with its own touching origin story. John Hastie Park, stretching from the town centre towards the bowling and putting greens, was established through the bequest of a local grocer who wished to create a public space for the people of Strathaven. George Allan Park, the larger section, was created by Reverend James Allan in memory of his son, George, who died at just thirteen years old. Together, these two parks form a cohesive green space that has served the community for generations, earning Green Flag status for its exceptional maintenance and community value.

The Historic Miniature Railway: Scotland's Oldest

At the heart of George Allan Park sits one of Strathaven's most beloved attractions: the Strathaven Miniature Railway, officially Scotland's oldest miniature railway. Established in 1949 by the Strathaven Model Railway Society, this volunteer-run attraction has been delighting visitors for over seven decades. The railway still operates its original locomotive, Margaret, which first ran on the tracks on 14 May 1949 and remains in use for special occasions. The miniature railway operates seasonally from Easter through the end of September on weekends, weather permitting, with extended weekday hours during summer holidays. A journey costs just £1 per person, making it an affordable family experience that has become a multi-generational tradition for many local families.

Water, Gardens, and Seasonal Celebrations

The Powmillon burn flows through the park as an attractive natural feature, eventually meeting the River Avon. This watercourse, combined with meticulously maintained flower beds and open green spaces, creates a tranquil atmosphere despite the park's location adjacent to the busy A726 Glasgow Road. The park's setting makes it an ideal venue for community events, most notably the annual Strathaven Gala celebrations, which include the famous Duck Race down the burn, and the August Balloon Festival, which transforms the park into a spectacle of colour and activity.

Recreation for All Ages and Interests

Beyond the miniature railway, Strathaven Park offers diverse recreational opportunities. The boating pond features kayaks, pedalos, and rowing boats available during the season, providing water-based activities for families and couples alike. Two well-maintained children's play areas cater to different age groups, with equipment designed for both toddlers and older children. For those seeking quieter pursuits, the putting green and lawn bowling facilities offer leisurely entertainment, while two football pitches and tennis courts serve more active visitors. A café operates within the park, providing refreshments and light meals at reasonable prices, staffed by friendly volunteers and employees.

Accessibility and Practical Amenities

The park prioritises accessibility for all visitors. Wheelchair-accessible entrances and car parks are available, and assistance dogs are welcome throughout the grounds. Ample free parking is concentrated at the north end of George Allan Park, with additional limited parking available off the main road. The park remains open 24 hours daily, though specific activities and facilities operate seasonally. During winter months, the miniature railway and boating facilities close, but the open spaces, walking paths, and sports facilities remain accessible year-round, making Strathaven Park a destination for all seasons.
