Hornby Castle's origins trace back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when it was initially established by the Neville family on the foundations of an earlier medieval structure. The Nevilles, prominent players in the War of the Roses, made the castle their home until the 1500s. The site itself had earlier significance, with Roman roads passing nearby, underscoring its strategic importance. The castle’s central Keep tower, dating to around 1520, remains a defining feature of its silhouette, symbolizing its medieval roots.Historical Turmoil and Ownership Changes
Throughout its history, Hornby Castle was a focal point of political and military upheaval. In the 16th century, under Baron Monteagle, the castle played a role in suppressing the Rising of the North, an attempt to replace Queen Elizabeth I with Mary, Queen of Scots. Monteagle added the distinctive polygonal tower that still stands today. His son’s lineage includes William Parker, the 4th Baron Monteagle, famed for warning of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. During the English Civil War, the castle was captured by Parliamentary forces and briefly held by the Duke of Hamilton’s Scottish army.
