- Check the box office opening times before visiting; it only opens on event nights from 6pm (excluding certain shows). Purchase tickets online in advance when possible.
- If you require accessible seating, register for a Nimbus Disability Access Card in advance. Level access seating is available in Balcony row A and Stalls rows A, AA, and BB.

Discover more about York Barbican
A Modern Entertainment Hub in Historic York
York Barbican stands as the largest entertainment venue in the city, commanding a prominent position on Paragon Street at the southern edge of York's city centre, directly opposite the medieval city walls. This contemporary indoor facility represents a significant cultural and entertainment anchor for the region, hosting over 200 events annually and welcoming more than 130,000 visitors each year. The venue's impressive dual capacity—1,500 seated and 1,900 standing—makes it capable of accommodating everything from intimate comedy nights to large-scale touring productions and corporate gatherings. From Vision to Closure to Revival
The current York Barbican building was constructed in 1989 at a cost of £15 million by York Council as part of a broader leisure complex that included a swimming pool, sports hall, climbing wall, and café facilities. For over a decade, the venue served the community with a diverse programme of concerts, classes, and local events, including the annual York Interschool Battle of the Bands. However, consistent operational losses led York Council to place the facility on the market in 2000, seeking private management. The subsequent years proved turbulent, with proposed developments ranging from new swimming facilities to apartments and even a casino, each facing local opposition from resident groups. By 2004, with no consensus reached and legal challenges ongoing, York Barbican closed its doors and remained vacant for years, deteriorating through weathering and vandalism. The swimming pool building was demolished, leaving the site in limbo. Only the prestigious UK Snooker Championship continued to use the venue sporadically during this period, maintaining its status as host to Britain's second-ranking snooker tournament.Restoration and Contemporary Success
In spring 2011, York Barbican underwent a transformative £1.5 million refurbishment and reopened under council ownership with professional management by ASM Global, an international venue operator. This revival proved decisive. Today, the venue ranks among the top 20 music club venues in the UK according to Pollstar's 2019 rankings and has hosted major touring artists including Little Mix, Manic Street Preachers, Morrissey, and Ricky Gervais. The venue continues to host the UK Snooker Championship annually, cementing its status as a premier sporting venue. Beyond entertainment, York Barbican serves as a significant conference and events space, offering flexible configurations for corporate functions, product launches, and business gatherings.Facilities and Accessibility
The venue features comprehensive modern amenities including multiple bars, on-site light refreshments, air conditioning, and dedicated facilities for guests with disabilities. Wheelchair access is available throughout, with level access seating on the Balcony and designated Stalls rows. Disabled toilets, wheelchairs, and assistance for visually and hearing-impaired visitors are standard provisions. A main cloakroom operates on the Stalls floor, opening 90 minutes before events and closing 30 minutes after. The venue welcomes service dogs and provides baby-changing facilities, making it genuinely family-oriented. Parking is available at the nearby Q-Park on Kent Street, with drop-off points at both front and rear entrances.Location and Connectivity
Situated just five minutes' walk from York's city centre, York Barbican benefits from excellent accessibility via public transport and private vehicle. The venue forms part of the city ring road and is easily reached from major transport hubs. Its proximity to York's historic core, including the famous city walls and castle, makes it an integral part of the city's cultural landscape. The venue's central location means visitors can readily combine an event with exploration of York's medieval streets, museums, and attractions.Programming and Cultural Significance
York Barbican's calendar reflects its role as a cultural crossroads, hosting the Liberal Democrat Conference regularly, major sporting championships, and an eclectic mix of entertainment. From stand-up comedy to dance productions, from classical music to contemporary touring acts, the venue's programming demonstrates its versatility. The venue curfew for evening events is 11pm, and management advises arriving early to avoid queues. This breadth of programming, combined with its professional management and modern facilities, has established York Barbican as an essential destination for live entertainment in the North of England.Iconic landmarks you can’t miss
