However, consistent operational losses led York Council to place the facility on the market in 2000, seeking private management. By 2004, with no consensus reached and legal challenges ongoing, York Barbican closed its doors and remained vacant for years, deteriorating through weathering and vandalism. The swimming pool building was demolished, leaving the site in limbo. Only the prestigious UK Snooker Championship continued to use the venue sporadically during this period, maintaining its status as host to Britain's second-ranking snooker tournament.

Restoration and Contemporary Success

In spring 2011, York Barbican underwent a transformative £1.5 million refurbishment and reopened under council ownership with professional management by ASM Global, an international venue operator. This revival proved decisive. Today, the venue ranks among the top 20 music club venues in the UK according to Pollstar's 2019 rankings and has hosted major touring artists including Little Mix, Manic Street Preachers, Morrissey, and Ricky Gervais. The venue continues to host the UK Snooker Championship annually, cementing its status as a premier sporting venue. Beyond entertainment, York Barbican serves as a significant conference and events space, offering flexible configurations for corporate functions, product launches, and business gatherings.
