Aydon Castle began as a timber hall on land purchased by merchant Hugh de Raymes in the early 1290s. After Hugh's death, his son Robert initiated the construction of the stone manor, including the solar block, around the turn of the 14th century. Fortifications were added from 1305, not primarily for defence but to demonstrate status and prestige. Despite its impressive defensive features, the castle lies over 35 miles from the Scottish border, emphasizing its role as a fortified residence rather than a military stronghold.

The castle is notable for its almost complete preservation, including its curtain walls, gatehouses, and internal courtyards. Visitors can explore the outer courtyard leading to the visitor reception and shop, as well as the inner courtyard surrounded by ranges of medieval buildings. Unique features include a prominent garderobe projecting near the main gateway and an iron staircase inserted into the solar block. The ground floor of the kitchen block was historically adapted to house livestock, reflecting the castle's evolving use over centuries.

Nestled on a bluff overlooking the Cor Burn valley, Aydon Castle is surrounded by steep slopes on three sides, providing natural protection and scenic views.
