The York

History and Heritage

Dating back to 1878, The York has been a beloved cornerstone of Norwich's Golden Triangle neighborhood. Originally built by Bullards as a corner local, it retains authentic Victorian features like an old bar counter, mirrored back fittings with gilded panels for whiskies, brandies, and cordials, and possible original fireplaces with ornate ceiling roses. Reopened in May 2023 by a passionate hospitality team, it honors its legacy while introducing contemporary touches, including a revived pétanque pitch nodding to the 1920s York bowling club.

Atmosphere and Ambiance

Step inside to warmth and comfort, with flickering open fires on chilly days, sumptuous ox blood Chesterfields, and cozy seating that invites lingering. The airy, open-plan interior maintains traditional pub style. On sunny days, head to the spacious beer garden surrounded by herb gardens for boules or relaxed al fresco dining. Upstairs, a function room with its own bar hosts private events, parties, and celebrations for up to 30 seated.

The ever-changing seasonal menu showcases modern British fare with Norfolk's finest local produce: hand-reared beef from Swannington Farm, seafood and game from Howard & Son, vegetables from Barsby Produce, and artisan breads from Dozen Bakery. Pair dishes with locally brewed cask ales, European lagers, or a low-intervention wine list. Bar snacks, lunch, and dinner are served throughout, with highlights like mussels and Sunday roasts praised for generous portions and quality.

Ideal for birthdays, corporate events, or curated supplier showcases, the upstairs space offers tailored canapés, multi-course meals, and a dedicated bar. While not currently booking 2023 weddings, 2024 inquiries are welcome. The pub's community focus includes Wednesday meal deals pairing mains with ale or wine.
