History
St Augustine's stands as the sole pre-Reformation church in Norfolk dedicated to St Augustine, with records dating to 1163. The current structure, substantially rebuilt in the early 15th century, saw its distinctive flint tower collapse and be rebuilt in brick between 1682-1687—the only such tower in Norwich. Restored in the 1880s by R.M. Phipson, it now falls under the Churches Conservation Trust. The congregation gathers in the adjacent hall for regular services, while the church hosts special occasions.Architecture
Constructed mainly from flint with stone and brick dressings, the square-planned church boasts a nave and chancel of equal length, full-length aisles, clerestory, south porch, and rood turret. The three-stage brick tower features pointed-arch windows, square vents, and twin-light bell openings. Inside, admire the rare brickwork contrasting Norwich's flint tradition, plus memorials to architect Matthew Brettingham of Holkham Hall and textile magnate Thomas Clabburn, erected by local weavers.Memorials and Art
The interior houses compelling tributes, including a mural to Thomas Churchman Newman, linking to American Revolution lore via his brother Robert's lantern signal for Paul Revere. A 1918 south aisle window depicts the Resurrection, honoring a parish soldier killed in 1917—unusually, alongside a memorial to another executed for desertion. The two-manual organ hails from St Peter's Hungate, now a museum.Setting and Access
Nestled west of St Augustine's Street (A1024) near the inner ring road, the church occupies a spacious churchyard flanked by 16th-century half-timbered cottages. As Norwich's most northerly medieval church, it sits just inside the city walls in the historic Ultra Aquam ward. Access involves a paved footpath with one step; no modern facilities like heating or restrooms due to its heritage status.Visiting Today
Open for exploration, the church relies on natural light, with event lighting available. It's a tranquil retreat amid Norwich's vibrant center, ideal for those tracing the city's ecclesiastical past amid nearby landmarks like Norwich Cathedral and Elm Hill.
