Discovering OUTPOST Gallery

Nestled at the end of a quiet alleyway off Wensum Street in Norwich's historic Tombland district, OUTPOST Gallery stands as a beacon for contemporary art. Founded in 2004 by seven local artists, this artist-run space has evolved into a charitable incorporated organisation, trading as Norwich OUTPOST. Its distinctive yellow branding, inspired by the HTML code #FBF696, marks its presence in the East of England's cultural landscape.

Artist-Led Excellence

Governed by a volunteer steering committee of up to eight local creatives serving two-year terms, OUTPOST embodies a dynamic model borrowed from pioneering spaces like Glasgow's Transmission Gallery. This structure ensures fresh perspectives and hands-on experience for participants. The gallery presents five exhibitions annually, featuring works by emerging talents, students, members, and renowned names such as Turner Prize nominees Karla Black and Elizabeth Price. Offsite projects, events, and artist editions further enrich its programme.

Commitment to Community and Support

OUTPOST's charitable aims focus on educating the public in contemporary art while relieving poverty among emerging artists through past studio provisions and networking. Its membership scheme invites anyone to join, offering exclusive exhibitions, residencies, and opportunities. The Core Programme nurtures upcoming artists, while the Creative Programme, partly funded by Arts Council England, supports those from working-class backgrounds. Over 150 exhibitions have been hosted since inception, fostering Norwich's contemporary art community.

Visiting the Space

Open only during exhibitions from Thursday to Sunday, 12pm to 6pm, with appointments available outside hours, the gallery offers free entry—donations encouraged. Access involves a short, uneven concrete alleyway and one step, with a portable ramp provided on request for step-free entry. Bike racks are nearby, and public transport is conveniently close.

Legacy and Influence

From its roots in the EASTinternational project to becoming a model for artist-led initiatives across the UK, OUTPOST continues to shift power democratically among volunteers. Though its Anglia Square studios closed in 2025 due to redevelopment, the gallery persists as a vital hub for uncompromised contemporary expression.
