The Malt Cross takes its name from a former monument that once stood nearby as a trading post for malt used in brewing. Despite a decline in the early 20th century, when it was briefly closed by courts, the building has been lovingly restored and repurposed as a community hub.

After a period of decline and varied uses—including a warehouse and restaurant—the Malt Cross was restored starting in the late 20th century, with major funding secured in 1997 to revive its heritage. Today, it operates as a not-for-profit venue under the Malt Cross Trust and Nottinghamshire YMCA, offering live music, theatre, and comedy. The venue also supports community outreach programs such as the Street Pastors service, reinforcing its role as a safe and welcoming space for Nottingham residents.

Beneath the Malt Cross lies an intriguing network of man-made caves, part of Nottingham’s famous subterranean landscape. These caves, once used for drainage and possibly other purposes, are accessible via tours that reveal a fascinating glimpse into the city’s hidden history. The venue continues to explore and develop these underground spaces, adding another layer of interest for visitors.
