To reach Mainland from any part of Orkney by car, simply follow the main roads leading to the center of the island. If you're coming from Kirkwall, the capital, take the A961 south towards St. Mary's, which connects to the A965. Follow the signs for Stromness to get to the western part of Mainland. Be sure to have a map or GPS handy as some rural roads may not have clear signage. There are no tolls on the roads within Mainland.
