A Dual Fortress with a Distinctive Design

Huntingtower Castle stands out in Scottish architecture as a rare example of two tower houses built side by side but initially not connected. The eastern tower, constructed around 1460, features a more austere medieval style, while the slightly younger western tower, built circa 1480, is L-shaped and more elaborate. Originally separated by a gap wide enough for a horse and cart, the towers were linked by a wooden bridge for defensive purposes, allowing occupants to retreat between them if one was attacked. By the late 17th century, this gap was filled with a three-storey connecting range, transforming the castle into a more conventional mansion-like structure.

Rich Interiors and Artistic Heritage

Inside the eastern tower, visitors can admire one of the oldest surviving painted wooden ceilings in Scotland, dating back to the 1540s. This tempera-painted ceiling, rediscovered in 1913 beneath pine panelling, depicts intricate foliage and a bird motif, showcasing the Renaissance artistic influence on Scottish noble residences. The western tower’s spacious hall retains traces of wall paintings and heraldic decoration, reflecting the status and tastes of its noble inhabitants.

The Ruthven Legacy and Royal Intrigue

Huntingtower was originally known as the Place of Ruthven, home to the Ruthven family from the 12th century. The family’s prominence peaked in the 16th century, notably with William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie. The castle is famously linked to the 1582 'Ruthven Raid', when the young King James VI was held captive there for about ten months by the Ruthvens in a politically motivated coup aimed at curbing Catholic influence. Although initially pardoned, the Earl was later executed, and the family’s fortunes declined dramatically after the 1600 Gowrie Conspiracy, an alleged plot to assassinate the king. Following these events, the castle was renamed Huntingtower by royal decree, and the Ruthven name was proscribed.

Transition and Later Ownership

After the Ruthvens’ fall, Huntingtower became crown property and was entrusted to the Murray family, who maintained it until the early 19th century. Lord George Murray, a notable Jacobite general during the 1745 uprising, was born here. Over time, the castle fell into disrepair and was eventually abandoned as a residence. In the 20th century, it was placed under state care and is now managed by Historic Environment Scotland, preserving its legacy for visitors.

Legends and Romantic Folklore

Among the castle’s enduring tales is the story of Dorothea Ruthven, the Earl’s daughter, who allegedly made a daring leap across the gap between the two towers to escape her mother’s pursuit while visiting her lover in the opposite tower. This dramatic leap, spanning approximately 2.7 meters, is celebrated in local folklore as the 'Maiden’s Leap' and adds a romantic dimension to the castle’s storied past.

Visitor Experience and Atmosphere

Today, Huntingtower Castle offers a fascinating journey through Scotland’s medieval and Renaissance history amid atmospheric ruins. Visitors can explore the two towers, admire the rare painted ceiling, and imagine the political dramas that unfolded within its walls. The castle’s setting near Perth provides a tranquil backdrop, blending historic architecture with the natural beauty of Perthshire.
