Salmon Life and River Wonders

The Philiphaugh Salmon Viewing Centre immerses visitors in the fascinating journey of the Atlantic salmon, often called the King of fishes. Through large plasma screens, you can watch live underwater footage of salmon navigating the Ettrick River, as well as eels and other river fauna. The centre educates about the salmon’s life stages, migration, and spawning habits, supported by interactive displays including video games, paintings, and life-size models. A short walk leads to the Cauld, a dammed section of the river where mature salmon can be seen leaping upstream during spawning season, especially from August to November.

Golden Eagle Conservation and The Eyrie

Within the Waterwheel Tearoom lies The Eyrie, the UK mainland’s first Golden Eagle information point. This exhibition tells the story of the South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project, which has successfully increased the local golden eagle population through translocations and conservation efforts. Visitors can explore displays featuring satellite tracking devices, 3D printed eagle anatomy, feathers, and an eaglet in a travel box. Interactive elements include bird of prey identification games and videos showcasing the project’s work to restore this iconic raptor to southern skies.

Historic Estate and Natural Beauty

Philiphaugh Estate itself is steeped in history and natural charm. The estate features a fully restored working waterwheel, a walled garden bursting with seasonal produce, and woodland and riverbank paths that offer peaceful walks amid native wildlife such as otters, red squirrels, roe deer, and various birds. The estate also preserves a 160-year-old ecosystem around the Cauld, where water flow is managed to sustain local habitats. The nearby sawmill remains operational, producing timber for estate use and sale.

The Waterwheel Café, open daily, offers local produce and is the gateway to both the Salmon Centre and The Eyrie.
