Branklyn Garden: A Botanical Treasure on Kinnoull Hill

Origins Rooted in Botanical Exploration

Branklyn Garden was established in the early 1920s by John and Dorothy Renton, inspired by their passion for rare plants and the Arts & Crafts movement. After building their distinctive Arts & Crafts-style house on the side of Kinnoull Hill, they began cultivating the garden using seeds gathered by famous plant hunters such as George Forrest and Frank Ludlow. Their vision was to create a garden showcasing unusual and exotic species from across the world, particularly from China, Tibet, Bhutan, and the Himalayas.

A Diverse and Rare Plant Collection

The garden boasts an impressive variety of plants, including alpine flowers, dog’s tooth violet, magnolias, and the striking Himalayan blue poppy (Meconopsis x sheldonii). It holds several National Collections, notably of Meconopsis, Rhododendron (Taliense section), and Cassiope. Seasonal highlights include vibrant rhododendrons and alpines in spring and summer, and fiery autumn foliage with the katsura tree’s leaves releasing a sweet burnt sugar scent.

Nestled on a hillside overlooking the rooftops of Perth, Branklyn Garden offers tranquil and scenic views. The garden’s layout incorporates varied path surfaces such as gravel, bark, and grass, winding through woodland and rock garden areas. Visitor Experience and Amenities

Visitors can enjoy the garden’s tearoom, which serves home-baked cakes and light lunches, with indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the garden. Accessibility is considered with a step-free route available and limited disabled parking at the garden entrance. Well-behaved dogs on short leads are welcome, with water bowls provided throughout the garden.

Branklyn Garden is open daily from 10am to 5pm during the main season (March to October) and has reduced hours in winter months with some closures in mid-February and late March. Seasonal guided tours are available from April to October, offering deeper insights into the garden’s plants and history. The garden also features a holiday cottage for longer stays, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in its serene environment.
