Tantallon Castle Travel Guide

Tantallon Castle stands dramatically on a rocky promontory overlooking the North Sea near North Berwick. Constructed in the mid-14th century by William Douglas, Earl of Douglas, it was the last truly great medieval castle built in Scotland. The castle was home to the powerful Red Douglas family, also known as the Earls of Angus, who owned it for nearly 300 years. Its strategic location and formidable curtain wall made it a key defensive fortress, withstanding sieges by James IV in 1491 and James V in 1528 before being severely damaged by Oliver Cromwell’s artillery in 1651.

The castle’s most striking feature is its enormous five-storey central tower and the thick, high stone curtain wall that once enclosed the entire site. Unlike many castles, Tantallon’s defenses focused on the landward side, as the seaward cliffs provided natural protection. The curtain wall has very few openings to resist attacks from trebuchets, battering rams, and archers. Later adaptations included gun holes and external gun defenses like a gun tower and an earthen ravelin to counter artillery, though these proved insufficient against Cromwell’s siege.

Visitors enter through the central gate and can explore the vast courtyard, the remains of the Great Hall, and the castle’s dark pit prison. While the east tower, doocot (dovecot), and vaults are currently closed for safety reasons, the rest of the site offers extensive opportunities to roam. Climbing the battlements rewards visitors with panoramic views of the Bass Rock, Berwick Law, and the surrounding coastline. The ruins’ weather-worn stone and open battlements create an evocative atmosphere, reminiscent of a medieval fortress from a fantasy novel.

The castle is family-friendly, with children especially enjoying the medieval ambiance and the castle shop’s themed souvenirs like plastic swords and helmets. The grounds are accessible, though steep spiral staircases inside the castle may be challenging for those with mobility issues or vertigo. Facilities include restrooms near the entrance and a shop selling drinks and ice creams. Admission is reasonably priced, with discounts for Historic Scotland members and Young Scot cardholders. Opening hours vary seasonally, generally from 9:30am to 5pm in summer and 10am to 4pm in winter, with some closures around Christmas and New Year.

Recent archaeological excavations have uncovered walls of early outer buildings and possible original entry lines, enriching understanding of the castle’s development. Preservation efforts focus on maintaining the site’s structural integrity while allowing visitors to safely explore the evocative ruins. The castle’s dramatic cliffside setting and rich history make it a significant cultural heritage site and a highlight of Scotland’s medieval past.

Beyond its stones and stories, Tantallon Castle offers stunning natural beauty. The cliffs provide a habitat for seabirds, including gannets seen diving near Bass Rock. The coastal panorama, with ever-changing light and weather, enhances the castle’s timeless appeal.
