Thirlestane Castle stands on Castle Hill near Lauder, a site with fortifications dating back to the 13th century. The current castle was largely built in 1590 by Sir John Maitland on the foundations of a former English artillery fort from the Rough Wooings conflict. It replaced an older peel tower nearby. The castle was extensively remodelled in the 1670s by John Maitland, 2nd Earl and later Duke of Lauderdale, with further 19th-century expansions designed by William Burn and possibly David Bryce. This blend of Renaissance and Baroque architectural elements gives Thirlestane its grand and imposing character, including thick stone walls, round turrets, and vaulted basements.

Inside, the castle boasts some of the finest plasterwork ceilings in Europe, crafted with horsehair, egg white, and lime, featuring detailed garlands and feathered eagles.
