Nestled near the village of Rosemarkie on Scotland’s Black Isle, Fairy Glen Falls is a steep-sided glen renowned for its enchanting broadleaf woodland and natural beauty. The reserve’s winding footpath follows the Markie Burn stream, weaving through mossy rocks and ancient trees, creating an atmosphere that feels almost otherworldly. The woodland is alive with diverse flora and fauna, including buzzards soaring overhead and grey herons stalking the stream’s edge.

The highlight of the walk is the discovery of two stunning waterfalls, each cascading over vertical rock faces into shimmering pools below. The first waterfall is a gentle cascade perfect for quiet reflection, while a short climb up a steep stairway leads to the second, equally impressive fall. These waterfalls have inspired local folklore, including a well-dressing ceremony once held here, where children decorated a spring pool with flowers to ensure the fairies kept the water pure.

The 1.25-mile path is well-marked but steep, uneven, and slippery in places, with several sets of steps, demanding sturdy footwear and caution. Along the route, wooden bridges and fallen trees add to the glen’s charm, while the changing seasons paint the landscape in vivid colors—from lush greens in summer to golden hues in autumn. The walk ends near Rosemarkie’s sandy beach, offering a perfect contrast between woodland serenity and coastal openness.

Managed by RSPB Scotland, Fairy Glen is a protected nature reserve emphasizing wildlife preservation. Visitors are encouraged to follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, especially during the ground-nesting bird season from April to mid-August, keeping dogs on short leads and cleaning up after them. Barbecues are prohibited to prevent fire risks, preserving the delicate ecosystem.

Though the reserve itself lacks onsite toilets, public facilities are available a short 250-meter walk away in Rosemarkie village. The village also offers cafes and eateries to complement your visit. Nearby, Chanonry Point is a renowned spot for dolphin watching, and other local highlights include Wildwoodz Adventure Park and historic Fortrose Cathedral.

Fairy Glen Falls is accessible via a small Highland Council car park with about 10 spaces and a bike rack. Public transport options include local buses to Rosemarkie, but a car is recommended for easier access. The walk’s terrain is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs due to steep and uneven paths. The reserve invites visitors to immerse themselves in nature’s tranquility while respecting its fragile environment.
