Bolsover Castle was constructed in the early 17th century by Sir Charles Cavendish and his son William Cavendish, the 1st Duke of Newcastle. Built on the site of a medieval fortress, it was designed not as a defensive stronghold but as a lavish retreat and entertainment palace for courtiers. The centerpiece, known as the Little Castle, resembles a fairy-tale fortress with turrets and towers, featuring richly decorated interiors such as the Heaven Room and the Star Chamber. These rooms boast elaborate ceiling frescoes, carved marble fireplaces, and intricately painted walls, reflecting the opulence and artistic tastes of the Cavendish family.

The Terrace Range, now partly in ruins, once housed guest and servant quarters. Visitors can wander this evocative shell of the past, imagining the grand dining rooms and long galleries that once stood here. The wall walk around the Fountain Garden provides a tranquil setting for reflection and photography, with the garden itself home to thousands of plants and a central statue of Venus.

One of the castle’s unique features is the Riding House, one of England’s earliest indoor riding schools. Built by William Cavendish, it highlights the importance of horsemanship to the family. The Riding House hosts Cavalier horsemanship displays on weekends during warmer months, where riders dressed in period costume demonstrate classical dressage moves to Baroque music, offering a vivid glimpse into 17th-century equestrian culture.
