Discover more about Great Orme Mines

Unearthing a Bronze Age Marvel

The Great Orme Mines represent one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in Britain, dating back some 3,500 to 4,000 years to the Bronze Age. Uncovered in 1987 during landscaping works, these mines reveal a sophisticated early mining operation that challenges previous assumptions about prehistoric societies in the region. The site is believed to be the largest prehistoric copper mine in the world, with an extensive network of underground tunnels carved out by ancient miners using primitive tools.

Immersive Underground Exploration

Visitors descend approximately 35 steps into the cool, dimly lit tunnels that stretch for around 200 metres. The self-guided tour allows you to explore at your own pace, with informative boards throughout the passageways detailing mining techniques, working conditions, and the lives of the Bronze Age miners. The experience is enhanced by the provision of hard hats and the atmospheric, authentic environment of the mine itself.

Above-Ground Archaeological Features

Emerging from the tunnels, the journey continues to the open-air opencast mine, where you can appreciate the scale of ancient mining operations. Nearby, the Smelting Shelter offers a video demonstration showing how early miners transformed copper ore into usable metal. From the vantage point overlooking a 470-foot nineteenth-century mine shaft, visitors can enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the site and surrounding landscape, including the Snowdonia mountains on clear days.

Visitor Centre and Onsite Amenities

The modern visitor centre sets the scene with exhibitions of ancient artefacts and an introductory film explaining the mine’s discovery and historical significance. Facilities include a gift shop selling crystals, fossils, jewellery, and books, as well as a second-hand bookshop. There are also toilets, picnic areas, and a small café offering refreshments. The site is dog-friendly and accessible to visitors with assistance dogs.

Historical and Cultural Significance

The Great Orme Mines offer a unique window into prehistoric Britain’s industrial past, highlighting advanced mining techniques long before the Roman invasion. The site’s ongoing archaeological work continues to uncover new tunnels and artefacts, deepening our understanding of Bronze Age society and technology. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and the enduring legacy of early metalworkers.

Seasonal Access and Visitor Experience

Open from mid-March to the end of October, the mines welcome visitors daily from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Tickets are purchased on arrival, with family and child rates available, and children under five admitted free. Most visitors spend around 40 minutes to an hour exploring the tunnels, outdoor quarry, and exhibitions, making it an ideal half-day excursion while enjoying the scenic beauty of the Great Orme and Llandudno bay.
