Kylesku Bridge Travel Guide

The Kylesku Bridge, officially named Drochaid a' Chaolais Chumhaing since 2019, is a masterful example of civil engineering nestled in the northwest Highlands of Scotland. Completed in 1984 and opened by Queen Elizabeth II, this 275-metre-long structure gracefully arches over a 130-metre-wide channel connecting Loch Glencoul and Loch Glendhu with Loch a' Chàirn Bhàin. Its distinctive curved concrete box girder design was engineered to withstand fast tidal currents and deep waters up to 25 metres, with a deck height of 24 metres above high water to allow safe navigation beneath.

Before the bridge, a ferry service dating back to the early 1800s was the only way to cross the strait, often requiring a lengthy detour of 100 miles inland if the ferry was not running. The bridge was conceived in the late 1970s, with construction beginning in 1982. It was built by Morrison Construction and Lehane, Mackenzie and Shand, using innovative methods such as building out the supporting legs and lifting the central 640-tonne span into place. The project cost £4 million, nearly double the initial budget, but it revolutionized travel in the region by providing a reliable year-round crossing.

Set amidst the dramatic scenery of Sutherland, the bridge offers breathtaking views of the surrounding lochs and rugged mountains, including the nearby Quinag range. Visitors can enjoy panoramic vistas from car parks located at both ends of the bridge, with the northern car park offering elevated views of the entire structure and the southern car park providing insight into the bridge’s underside and construction details. A memorial cairn near the northern car park commemorates the X-Craft submariners of World War II, who operated from a base beneath the bridge’s location. This moving tribute adds a poignant layer to the site, connecting visitors to the bravery and history of the region.

The bridge is a favorite subject for photographers, especially during the golden hour when the light enhances the natural beauty of the landscape and the bridge’s elegant curves. The surrounding lochs reflect the changing skies, creating stunning photographic opportunities year-round. While accessible in all seasons, visitors should be cautious in winter months due to icy roads and variable weather conditions typical of northern Scotland.

Easily accessible by car along the A894, the Kylesku Bridge is a key stop on the renowned North Coast 500 route. Ample parking is available at both ends of the bridge, and nearby facilities include the Rock Stop Café and Exhibition Centre on the southern approach, offering refreshments and local information. The nearby village of Kylestrome features ancient Scottish brochs and additional historical sites, enriching the visitor experience.
