A Landmark of Engineering and Design

The Kylesku Bridge, officially named Drochaid a' Chaolais Chumhaing since 2019, is a masterful example of civil engineering nestled in the northwest Highlands of Scotland. Completed in 1984 and opened by Queen Elizabeth II, this 275-metre-long structure gracefully arches over a 130-metre-wide channel connecting Loch Glencoul and Loch Glendhu with Loch a' Chàirn Bhàin. Its distinctive curved concrete box girder design was engineered to withstand fast tidal currents and deep waters up to 25 metres, with a deck height of 24 metres above high water to allow safe navigation beneath.

Historical Context and Construction

Before the bridge, a ferry service dating back to the early 1800s was the only way to cross the strait, often requiring a lengthy detour of 100 miles inland if the ferry was not running. The bridge was conceived in the late 1970s, with construction beginning in 1982. It was built by Morrison Construction and Lehane, Mackenzie and Shand, using innovative methods such as building out the supporting legs and lifting the central 640-tonne span into place. The project cost £4 million, nearly double the initial budget, but it revolutionized travel in the region by providing a reliable year-round crossing.
