Seb gave us in-depth historical information on every place we went on our tour. He had knowledge I would not have expected (why there are not many trees in the area), and was honest the few times he did not have an answer. We learned much more about Stonehenge than we expected, and I so appreciated Seb’s enthusiasm for the history of the area. Loved walking around the Avebury Circle; with Seb’s help, we were able to understand what it would have looked like thousands of years ago. Seb pointed out many other unique views on our trip: a chalk horse, Old Sarum, and even where Sting lives! He took us to a great farm restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Our last stop was the Salisbury Cathedral. Seb was not able to accompany us into the church, but he had already given us plenty of information about its history. We wanted to do an individual tour so that we could learn more about all these sites, and Seb truly delivered! I’d highly recommend his tours.

Our experience with Ed Shepherd couldn't have been more informative and delightful. The tour was very well-organized but flexible in the sense that we were able to spend more time on things that were of particular interest as we went along. Ed is extremely knowledgeable (a PhD archeologist who focuses ancient Great Britain), and also personable and easy to talk to. He was great in talking about what we know, as well as the competing hypotheses surrounding what we don't know.

A really special way to experience prehistoric Britain

In 2017, my sister and I took a small group tour with Archaeologist Guided Tours. The day was so incredible that I booked a private tour over the 2025 holidays for me, my husband, and our teenaged daughter. It's quite hard to put into words how special this experience is. You get to spend the day with a person whose life's work is understanding the prehistory of Britain. Dr. Edward Shepherd is a gifted storyteller, laying out the context for sites like Stonehenge and Avebury in such a way that you feel you are standing in the ancient past. Even our teenager, who is not so much a history buff as we are, reflected on the day with awe and appreciation. The logistics for the day were all carefully planned by Dr. Shepherd, taking into account my particular interests to include a visit to the West Kennett Long Barrow. We were privileged to be driven for the day by a private chauffeur in a comfortable sprinter van. We were picked up and dropped off at our London accommodations.
