Blue Cave and Yakel Tribe tour

Great combination of nature and culture

Our hotel, Rockwater Resort, sits right next to the Blue Cave, which saved us from a bumpy ride. We went in the morning at low tide, when you have to swim in through the entrance hole. Inside, the cave was absolutely stunning—especially with sunlight streaming through another opening in the dome. Everything looked completely surreal. In the afternoon we visited Yakel Village with our volcano tour guide John and Helen. We saw the indigenous people’s traditional houses and learned how they make a living through weaving and farming. To top it off, they treated us to a warm, energetic traditional dance. All in all, it was an unforgettable experience.

Tanna Island: Full Day Tour Including Mt Yasur Volcano and the Hotspring

One of the best tours I've ever done

Our driver John and his wife Helen took us on a fascinating tour around Tanna Island. The journey was quite long and covered most of the main tourist attractions near the volcano, including Lenakel Market, the Cannibal Village, Shark Bay, White Beach, the hot springs, and of course the famous Mount Yasur. Helen shared many stories about how the locals make a living on the island, and we were surprised to discover that some of their traditional customs were quite similar to those in China in the old days. We spotted plenty of sharks in the water at Shark Bay, and not far from there, White Beach was simply stunning. Best of all, everything lined up perfectly for us to witness an incredible lava show at Mount Yasur. The tour was exhausting but incredibly rewarding.

Very personal treat in a local village

We had a bumpy start 'cause flight from Port Vila to Tanna Island was canceled! Charlie and the driver waited in Tanna airport, keep communicating with us till we were sure that we couldn't fly and have to cancel the trip. Despite of the disappointment , we were allocated with a new flight for the next day! Informed Charlie and we're on again. We really appreciate Charlie's patience and flexibility with the hiccups. On arrival, he and the driver brought us to the village which is close to the volcano. They showed us around the village, introduced us to his family, and we spent nice time on a beach nearby in company with his nine year old daughter. We also mingled with farm animals from piglets to chicken, dog and cats... The bungalow we stayed is very basic but clean and well organized with mosquito net. Shower and tiolet are located in separate huts nearby. Solar powered electricity available. Dinner and breakfast were simple but healthy and delish. As for the visit to the volcano, we're taken there by the driver and joined other travellers to visit the rim of the volcano for the evening. Great to have this local experience and learn about local livings if you are tired of stock standard resort type of accommodation and want to meet friendly locals. A very down-to-earth and humbling experience.
