Getting There

• Car

  If you're driving from the central Upper Valley area, head south on US Route 5 towards Brattleboro. After about 14 miles, merge onto VT-30 S in Newfane. Continue on VT-30 S for approximately 15 miles until you reach the junction with VT-73 W. Take a left onto VT-73 W and follow it for about 20 miles. Finally, turn right onto Mount Independence Road, and you will find the entrance to Mount Independence at 472 Mt Independence Rd, Orwell, VT 05760.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Mount Independence using public transportation, first take the Green Mountain Transit bus from Upper Valley towards Middlebury. The bus services may require transfers, so check the schedule in advance. Get off at the Middlebury stop, and from there, you will need to take a taxi or rideshare service as public transportation does not directly reach Mount Independence. The taxi ride from Middlebury to Mount Independence is approximately 15 miles and should cost around $30-$40.

• Bicycle

  For those looking to cycle, you can start from the Upper Valley area and follow the same route as cars. Ensure you have a proper bike map as you will be biking on roads with varying traffic conditions. The ride is approximately 50 miles and will take several hours, so plan accordingly and bring plenty of water and snacks.

• Walking/Hiking

  If you are adventurous and are staying nearby, you can hike to Mount Independence from nearby towns. However, this is quite a long trek and not advisable for casual tourists. The best approach is to combine a local bus or taxi as mentioned above for a more efficient journey.
