History of Tran Phu Beach

From Coastal Settlement to Resort

Before modern tourism, the Nha Trang shoreline formed part of a coastal landscape connected to fishing, maritime trade and the wider cultural world of central Vietnam. The urban development of Nha Trang accelerated under French colonial rule, when officials and visitors began to view its bay, climate and beach as assets for a coastal resort. The seafront was gradually incorporated into the town’s civic and recreational layout, establishing the relationship between the beach, the principal road and the institutions that still give Tran Phu its identity.

Science on the Seafront

Tran Phu’s history is also associated with the scientific work centred on Nha Trang. Alexandre Yersin established the Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang in 1895, creating a lasting medical and research presence on the coastal road. Yersin lived and worked in the city for many years, and the museum dedicated to him occupies the former residence within the institute complex. These institutions connected a developing seaside town to international research networks while leaving a cultural landmark directly within the modern beachfront district.

A Civic Waterfront Emerges

During the twentieth century, the shore became increasingly legible as Nha Trang’s public waterfront, with roads, promenades and open gathering spaces linking the beach to the central city. After national reunification, the area continued to serve everyday civic life as well as leisure. The square now known as 2/4 Square commemorates 2 April 1975, the date associated with the liberation of Nha Trang and Khanh Hoa Province. Its position beside the beach gives the seafront a political and communal role alongside its recreational one.

Tourism and the Modern Promenade

From the late twentieth century onwards, improved transport, domestic travel and international tourism transformed Tran Phu into Nha Trang’s principal hotel and entertainment corridor. High-rise accommodation, restaurants, cafés and beach clubs increasingly occupied the land behind the public shore, while the promenade remained a shared urban space. This development brought greater visitor infrastructure but also made the beachfront more commercially oriented. Today Tran Phu Beach combines a heavily visited resort environment with public bathing, morning exercise, civic events and the enduring presence of Nha Trang’s scientific and historical institutions.
